Rohit Sharma breaks two world records in one match against Afghanistan

NewDelhi: Indian captain Rohit Sharma became the joint-fastest batsman to reach 1,000 runs in the World Cup and the first player to hit 555 sixes in international cricket in the match against Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Sharma started the World Cup with 978 runs in 17 innings and reached the milestone in his 19th inning with two balls in the current inning. He joins Australian opener David Warner as the joint-fastest batsman to reach 1,000 runs in the World Cup.

Additionally, Sharma broke Chris Gayle’s previous record of 553 sixes in international cricket by becoming the first player to hit 555.

Sharma is the fourth Indian to complete 1,000 runs in the World Cup, after Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Virat Kohli.

In 2015, Sharma started his World Cup journey by scoring 330 runs in the quarterfinal against Bangladesh. He broke the record for the most centuries in a single edition of the World Cup by scoring five centuries in 2019, and he also made the highest run of the tournament with 648 runs. Sharma has now scored six centuries in the World Cup, equal to Sachin Tendulkar.
